Concealed Handgun Permit Application

Learning the laws regulating the use of firearms is a must for responsible ownership. Local regulations differ and laws vary from state to state. Citizens must check where the firearm is to be used.

The sheriff and his staff are required to follow strict state guidelines when performing the necessary background checks for Concealed Handgun Permits (CHP). Due to the nature of the detailed due diligence, appointment times and processing times can take multiple weeks. During the application process, you will be required to schedule an appointment for New, Renewal, and Name Change applications. Please note that you will be asked to pay now to reserve your appointment.

The application must be submitted to the Sheriff of the County or City and County in which the applicant resides or to the Sheriff of the County or City and County in which the applicant maintains a secondary residence or owns or leases real property used by the applicant in a business. 

• For a NEW CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT, you will be asked to schedule a fingerprint appointment.
• If you are applying for a CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT RENEWAL, you may not apply until 120 days prior to the expiration date shown on your current CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT.
• LATE RENEWAL applications will be accepted up to six (6) months after the expiration date shown on the current Concealed Handgun Permit but you must take a refresher course within six (6) months of your permit expiring. If your permit is more than six (6) months expired then you must submit a new concealed handgun permit application, to include a certificate for a new concealed hand gun permit training course taught by a Verified Instructor.
• If your Concealed Handgun Permit is lost, stolen, or destroyed, you must contact the agency where the permit was issued within 3 business days.

As of July 1, 2025, new requirements have gone into effect for all Colorado residents applying for a new Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) or renewing a Concealed Handgun Permit. Please review the updated requirements for receiving a new or renewed Concealed Handgun Permit below.

Requirements for All Concealed Handgun Permit Classes (New and Renewal)

• Classes must be taught in person by the Verified Instructor. 
• No portion of the class may be held online.
• Concealed Handgun training classes and refresher classes are subject to the requirements of the federal "Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.”

Requirements for New Concealed Handgun Permits

• All applications submitted after JULY 1, 2025 must have completed a course taught by a VERIFIED INSTRUCTOR within one (1) year of application submission.

• New Concealed Handgun Course certificates are only good for ONE (1) YEAR.

Elements Required for New Concealed Handgun Training Class

• Required Duration: Minimum of 8 hours. This does not need to be consecutive.
• Required instructor led education covering topics defined in Colorado Revised Statute 18-12-202.5.
• Students are required to complete a live-fire exercise on a range, discharging at least 50 rounds with a minimum accuracy score of 70%. This does not need to be conducted in a single day. 
• Students are required to complete a written Concealed Handgun Competency exam, which tests the student’s knowledge of the subjects described in C.R.S 18-12-205.5 (3)(a) to (3)(f), with a minimum score of 80%. This exam must be an open-book exam.

Requirements for Renewal of Concealed Handgun Permit

• All applications submitted after JULY 1, 2025 must have completed a course taught by a VERIFIED INSTRUCTOR within six (6) months of application submission.
  • The list of Verified Instructors in Mesa County can be found on the Verified Instructors section of this page.
• Renewal (aka refresher class) Concealed Handgun Course certificates are only good for SIX (6) MONTHS.
  • Refresher class certificates are not valid to use to apply for a new Concealed Handgun Permit.

Elements Required for Refresher Class for Concealed Handgun Permit Renewal

• Required Duration: Minimum of 2 hours.
• Require students to complete a live-fire exercise on a range, discharging at least 50 rounds with a minimum accuracy score of 70%.
• Instruction on changes to federal and state laws related to firearms enacted within five (5) years prior to the refresher class.
• Require students to complete a written Concealed Handgun Competency exam, which tests a student’s knowledge of the subjects described in C.R.S 18-12- 205.5 (3)(a) to (3)(f), with a minimum score of 80%. This exam must be an open-book exam.

• The fee for a new application is $52.50* (credit/debit card only).
• Renewal application fees are $13.00* (credit/debit card only).
• Name change fees are $13.00* (credit/debit card only).

*Concealed Handgun Permit Applications are done online through Permitium which charges the applicant a small processing fee (fee is dependent on the application type).

When you arrive for your scheduled appointment

• Please allow at least 30 minutes to complete the in-person application process. You will be fingerprinted and a photo will be taken. You must bring a valid government-issued picture ID.
• It may take up to 90 days to complete your application. You will receive an email or text notification when your permit is ready to pick up.
• Fees are non-refundable.

All firearms training certificates submitted for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit in Mesa County must be completed by an instructor and verified by the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
